Language and Literacy Together: An Intervention for English Language Learners
In this session we will address how an effective language and literacy intervention can be personalized and applied to English Language Learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse populations with risk for language learning difficulties and/or poor literacy outcomes. We will begin by reviewing the language foundations needed to support oral and written language development with a special focus on English Language Learners.
Then we will work through a video-based case study to illustrate how a literacy approach (one of the few demonstrated to be effective for English language learners) can be combined with oral language goals to make gains in language and literacy. We will identify 1) key goals to support the oral language foundations of literacy, 2) the most effective intervention strategies to support learning around these goals, and 3) ways to integrate these goals and strategies with the school curriculum. We will also review efficacy data for this approach. Case examples will form the basis of discussion of ways that this approach can be implemented in different service delivery contexts and in different languages.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe components of bilingual language intervention model that support oral and written language development
- Identify effective intervention strategies to support vocabulary and grammar development for children with language learning difficulties
- Quantify learning outcomes
- Adapt language learning activities to the academic context
