It’s a double whammy. Every year more children are diagnosed with learning disabilities and autism while school districts are forced to cut back on hiring experts who can help combat communication difficulties. To ease the shortfall and assist those with no access Abington Speech Pathology Services has launched a new initiative called RemoteSpeech.
RemoteSpeech combines crystal clear voice with the sharpest video to provide next-generation video calling and high definition delivery. The improved technology is more user-friendly and offers youngsters, stroke victims or anyone with speech and language delay or disorder an easy and non-threatening way to receive guidance from the experts. Orna Kempler-Azulay, President and Founder of ASPS a Pennsylvania and LA-based rehab staffing firm, says this is an option that can save strapped school administrators much needed cash.
“We are very excited about the twenty-first-century direction therapy is taking. School districts can save significant amounts of money in part because travel time is reduced to nothing,” noted Kempler-Azulay.
RemoteSpeech is the most advanced web-based platform that allows certified speech professionals the ability to conduct online therapy right from their home offices. This means greater flexibility for patients and clients. All that is needed to log on for the session is an email account and access to the Internet via a computer or tablet. According to an article in this month’s Wall Street Journal telemedicine is the wave of the future in all health-related fields. Kempler-Azulay explained,
“We know that speech teletherapy is the next generation direction our industry is taking. We are thrilled to be on the cutting edge of medical advancements utilizing the Internet. The best part is we can reach those who otherwise would be left with no hope”.
For children, RemoteSpeech entails a full range of stimuli including flashcards and technologically enhanced games. For adults, it can be a lifeline to the expertise needed.
In an exciting development, Abington Speech has collected data for research in collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and has been accepted by ASHA (American Speech and Hearing Association) and will be presented at the upcoming national convention in November. The study focuses on how patients are adapting to this method of conducting therapy. Dr. Joseph Donaher, Academic and Research Program Director of CHOP’s Center for Childhood Communications believes the results demonstrate that the time for telepractice has come.
“The latest research indicates that parents, educators and speech pathologists see the benefit of telepractice. Findings suggest this is an engaging way to give voice to children with speech and language needs and to meet and exceed their expectations” said Donaher.
Donaher also believes this method will ultimately alter the mindset of working with speech and language issues and relieve shortages in the industry. He is thrilled that Abington Speech has a program in place which could be examined.
Experts predict the problem will only get worse as the need for trained speech pathologists increases with fewer funds being earmarked to help. RemoteSpeech is a solution whose time and technology have arrived.
